With the summer high temperatures, the risks of forest fire increase, therefore, firemen train every Wednesday morning in order to be ready for all contingencies
High temperatures, drought and strong winds, the 2019 summer has kept the South-east firemen extremely vigilant, as they already had to fight wildfires several times this season. Though the Monegasque firemen haven’t fought any forest fires yet, they still need to stay in a permanent high vigilance mode. Every Wednesday morning, Lieutenant-Colonel Norbert Fassiaux’s men practice on the Beausoleil hills, through theoretical session, but also practical scenarios in which the fire station members fight against fake fires, but real flames. The weather conditions observed during the summer, in addition with the numerous houses that flourish on the Monaco bay hills, require the firefighters to remain vigilant at all cost. These training sessions can’t actually prevent fire from happening, but surely can help firemen stay sharp by working on their individual and collective reflexes, in order to be in the best conditions, in case the worst happens. As Lieutenant-Colonel Norbert Fassiaux points out, these rehearsals aim to protect the Monegasque residents, but also the people living in the neighbouring towns. He likes to remind that his men “should be prepared and trained for these kinds of situations and be able to take action on the French soil, according to the agreement settled in 1970 between the two services”.
