Bernard Fautrier, vice-president of the Monegasque Athletics Federation, and Jean-Pierre Schoebel, director of the international meeting, presented the events of this new edition this morning. On the programme, competitions with top athletes and free entertainment.
The Stade Louis-II will welcome the cream of the cream of the international athletes this Friday from 7pm, including the presence of three world record holders, Pierre-Ambroise Bosse, reigning world champion in the 800m or Filippo Tortu, Italian sprinter, holder of the 100m national record. And the list of “committed” is still long … Will we see records fall? The question remains unresolved until Friday night.
The triple jump women in the spotlight
After last year’s successful shot put competition at Port Hercule, the organization has decided to renew the experience, so the public will be able to attend the women’s triple jump contest on Thursday 19 July at 7pm on the Quai Albert I between the pool and the Rascasse. Then on Friday, eight men’s events (100m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m steeple, pole, javelin, triple jump), seven women’s (200m, 800m, Brave like Gabe Mile, 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, jump in height) and 41 races of 1000m will take place at the stadium. The programme will then be closed by the traditional fireworks at 10:15pm.
Brave like Gabe Mile, a tribute to a deceased athlete
Gabriele Grunewald would have been 33 years old on Tuesday 25 June. Reached cancer since 2009, she holds the 11th American performance of all time over 1,500m in 4’01”48 achieved in Monaco in 2013. In 2014, she became champion of the United States of the 3000m indoor. Then, in 2018, she created the association Brave like Gabe to raise funds and raise awareness about rare forms of cancer. After more than 10 years fighting against this disease, the American athlete, middle distance racing specialist, died on June 11, 2019. In his honor, the organization changes the name of the race Mile women that becomes the Brave Like Gabe Mile.
