IMOCA 60 Malizia II, one of the only current means of transport not to emit fossil emissions, will welcome Sweden’s Greta Thunberg on board in mid-August. Accompanied by Pierre Casiraghi and Boris Herrmann at the helm, the young activist will cross the Atlantic to participate in the United Nations World Climate Summit in New York on September 23rd.
The ocean racing ship Malizia II, one of the safest and fastest in the world, will welcome a special guest on the spotlight of the news in mid-August… Indeed, it is on this sailing boat that the young climate activist, Greta Thunberg, has chosen to go to the World Climate Summit of the United Nations, to be held in New York on September 23rd. A zero-emission means of transport, which will depart from England. “Greta is an ambassador who delivers a fundamental message both for our society and for the survival of future generations. Team Malizia and I are proud to cross the Atlantic alongside her. (…) I respect Greta’s courage to embark on this adventure, her total commitment, her sacrifice and her fight”, said Pierre Casiraghi, founder of the Malizia team and co-skipper of the sailboat.
A safe crossing
Boris Herrmann, a professional navigator, added: “Greta has the courage to face ignorance and injustice about the climate crisis. (…) We will make sure she reaches New York safely. I am delighted that our sports’ ambition and our sailing project can play a role in raising awareness of the most important challenge facing humanity today. I feel humbled that Greta accepted our offer as the lowest-carbon option to cross the Atlantic – despite the lack of comfort for her.”. Lucid about the significant defy posed by the current climate crisis, the two men are full of praise for the activism done by the young teenager, who made her name in November 2018 after initiating the “school climate strike” and gave a speech at COP24 in the same year. A crossing of which both men will ensure the safety. The mission will also be followed by teams of professionals from Team Malizia ashore and broadcast from the Malizia and Greta Thunberg websites, in addition to regular updates on social networks.
